Instagram Graph API Limitations and Alternatives

The real limits of the Instagram Graph API for reading other accounts: Business Discovery rules, the 30-hashtag weekly cap, comments and stories, with options.

The Instagram Graph API is the official way to build on Instagram, and it is the right choice for many products. But developers who need to read data about other accounts often discover its limits late, after weeks of app setup. This guide lists the main ones, based on Meta’s developer documentation, so you can decide early.

1. It is built around accounts that connect to you

Most Graph API data belongs to an Instagram Business or Creator account that has authorized your app. That is perfect for managing your own or your customers’ accounts: publishing, comment moderation, messaging and insights. It does not help when you want to evaluate a creator who has never heard of you.

2. Business Discovery covers only some accounts

The closest official feature for reading other accounts is Business Discovery. According to Meta’s documentation, you make the request from your own Business or Creator account and name another professional account by username. You can get public fields such as follower and media counts, and nested media fields such as likes and comment counts.

The limits that matter:

  • Only Business and Creator accounts can be looked up. Personal accounts cannot.
  • Age-gated accounts are excluded.
  • Stories, direct messages and private content are not available.
  • You still need your own professional account, a Facebook Page link and app review for production use.

3. Hashtag search has a weekly cap

The official hashtag search requires the Instagram Public Content Access feature, which goes through app review. After that:

  • You can query at most 30 unique hashtags per account in a rolling 7-day period. A hashtag counts for seven days after the first query.
  • Hashtags on Stories and emoji hashtags are not supported.
  • Results are limited to what Instagram returns for top and recent media.

For a tool that researches hundreds of tags, or monitors many campaigns for many clients, that limit is a wall. The cap is per connected account, so some teams connect more accounts to get more room.

4. Comments only on media you own

The Graph API exposes comments for media owned by the accounts connected to your app. It does not return the comments under another account’s public post. Social listening, giveaway tools and sentiment analysis of a competitor’s launch need exactly that.

5. No media variants and no downloads

The API returns media URLs for your own content but does not give you a list of every available video quality, and it is not designed for downloading other people’s content.

What to do

You have three realistic options:

  1. Stay on the Graph API if your product is about accounts that connect to you. It is sanctioned by Meta and has features no third party can offer: publishing, insights and messaging.
  2. Use a public-data API such as IGramAPI for everything about accounts that have not connected to you. It works from a username, has no app review and no hashtag cap, and covers comments, stories and media qualities.
  3. Combine both. Use the Graph API for connected customers and a public-data API for prospects, competitors and market research.

Questions to ask before you commit

  • Will the people I need data about ever connect to my app?
  • Do I need data about personal accounts, stories or other people’s comments?
  • How many hashtags or profiles do I need per week?
  • Can I wait for app review, and am I comfortable with its limits?
  • What does the data cost per thousand requests at my volume?

If most answers point to public information about accounts I do not control, a public-data API is the better fit. Read how to choose an Instagram data API for a full checklist.

Details above are based on Meta’s published documentation and can change. Always check the current Instagram Platform docs for the latest rules.
